Visual Survey of School Grounds #2

Today we took a walk around the school in the rain. It was pretty misarable outside but we made some observations anyways.

  1. Put up flyers to rent beds
  2. We could plant winter beds/find out what grows in winter/
  3. Plant more shrubs infront of school
  4. Fix or install sprinkler system/NLF is willing to help tap into our system
  5. Apply bright colors to help the garden look less dull and get more notice
  6. Paint the beds with bright colors
  7. Plant more veggies
  8. Clean litter with teams and teach others not to litter/lunch detention cleaning litter
  9. Add outside recycle containers/maybe city of Tacoma could donate
  10. Clean the school to make it more attractive on the outside
  11. Put up signs in neighborhood encouraging community help in the garden
  12. Advertise beds to community going door to door
  13. Plant flowers infront of school
  14. Set up a litter patrol
  15. Get the Farmer's Market started at our school
  16. Could city of Tacoma provide or donate pooper-scooper station
  17. Make improvements on Rain Garden
  18. Build Worm Bins
  19. Turn the current handi-cap accessible garden into a herb growing center by adding on hanging boxes

Visual Survey

Today we took a visual survey of the community garden and the outside of the school.

We had a few observations:

1.  There are no recycling containers outside.  We need to bring in recycling.
2.  There was a lot of recycling in the garbage cans.  We need to have SOME recycling containers and educate people on how to sort their trash.
3.  There is little community involvement.  We need to advertise the community garden in local stores and talk to the surrounding community about what we are doing.
4.  There were no signs designating which beds were being used.  We need signage.

Welcome Back

Patrick turned the compost.
Aurora helped weed some problem beds.
Frankie and Spencer picked up some litter around school.
Spencer levelled some of our rain garden posts.

On a positive note, Mr. Iverson talked to Miss Sharon across the street and she informed him that there are many people nearby that are interested in working a bed this year. She also commented that if we accomplish one of our goals to eventually have a Farmer's Market after school in the spring/summer it would really invigorate the neighborhood. She was excited to hear about the possibility.
