The Death of "Nancy" the Female Mallard

  • Nancy the Mallard Duck died at the approximate age of 3-4 years old on Monday, February 4 as the result of injuries sustained from rocks being thrown at her head repeatedly by male members of our school after the school day was over. Nancy has stopped by our raingarden pond for 3 years on her migration pattern north and south each year. She died in this pond on Monday.
  •  Nancy was born somewhere in the Northern Hemisphere a few springs ago. She was part of a clutch of brothers and sisters. She married Jimmy her mate a few years ago and has been travelling north and south ever since. She loved to sift water for algae, plant material and aquatic life as a food source and source of enjoyment. Nancy and her mate Jimmy were the only residence of the Stewart Middle School pond from the Mallard Duck species.
  •  Nancy is survived by her mate Jimmy and 600 plus children and 40 plus adults that watched over her and her habitat in the community garden pond area on the hill behind school. She also lost the chance to give birth to her own clutch this year. Jimmy has since left the pond in search of another mate who has lost her male counterpart. The students of Stewart will miss seeing her play in the water and feed with her mate.
  • If you would like to pay your respects to Nancy please do so by reminding others about the importance of not disturbing her home and habitat that she leaves behind. Littering, disturbing, and violence were Nancy's frustrations. She hoped that a clean pond will attract other ducks in the future.
  • If you would like to help the Stewart Middle School community garden you can make posters reminding people to respect the habitat and post them around school.
